Think winter means no hiking? Think again. January in the Smoky Mountains brings peaceful trails, wide open views, and fewer people making it one of the best times to explore.
Here are three of our favorite nearby hikes that are beautiful (and accessible) during winter months, especially if you’re staying with us at Laurel Valley Mountain Retreat:
(Easy to Moderate – 2 miles roundtrip)
Tucked near Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont, this short trail is ideal for a crisp winter day. You’ll hike through a quiet forest and reach a stunning waterfall that flows year round. Wear sturdy shoes winter rocks can be slick!
2. Townsend River Walk & Arboretum
(Easy – 2 miles)
Just down the road from Laurel Valley Mountain Retreat, this flat riverside trail is perfect for low key movement. The winter light glistening on the water is calming, and benches along the way make it a great slow stroll with scenic mountain views.
3. Cades Cove Loop (by Bike or Car)
Not a hike in the traditional sense, but in January, this 11-mile loop is often blissfully empty. You can stop at trailheads like Abrams Falls or simply enjoy wildlife and quiet vistas from your vehicle or bike.
Bonus: Warm Up Back at the Retreat
After your adventure, come home to a cabin that feels like it’s hugging you back with a hot shower, porch views, and maybe a firepit session under the stars.
